3 Years Later: The Game Changed, I didn't

Sorry I have been MIA. Life is getting pretty busy but that won't be stopping me from sitting down with my laptop on a Friday night with zero plans and writing what's in my head. August 14th will be 3 years since I started this blog and a lot has happened in that time frame. Many individuals struggling with gambling addiction have come and gone, a few of them usually stay sober while the other few get back on the sauce which is fine. Reach out again when you're ready to make a change but if you're not, at least it's in your mind you want to eventually.

I remember every little detail about how this whole blog started. It was Saturday, August 12, 2023 — two days before the official launch. I told someone who I cared about that I had a gambling problem. After that, I ran home, opened Microsoft Word and went to town writing my story. Hence Winning Daily was born. I then went all over social media and posted about it everywhere so I'd stop hiding it in the first place (which is the reason I am where I am to this day). The key to recovery is acceptance and honesty. Without either of those, you're just abstaining and will be bound to fall back. Accept the losses, be honest with those you care about how you're feeling, then take that next step towards a better life.

And man, has the landscape changed since I started this. Over the past 3 years, gambling has definitely evolved. I mean, you can bet on the weather? How many times the president will end and restart a war? Who's winning movie awards? Prediction markets are getting out of hand but everyone enjoys it I guess.

And that's the part that gets me. It's not even gambling anymore — at least that's what they tell themselves. It's "prediction markets." It's "forecasting." It's dressed up like investing or some kind of intellectual parlor game where you're putting your money on real-world outcomes instead of a point spread. But let's call it what it is: it's betting. You're risking money on an uncertain outcome hoping to get more back. That's gambling. Slapping a different label on it doesn't change what's happening in your brain when you do it.

The scary part is how normal it's become. You don't need a sportsbook or a casino app. You don't even need a game to be on. There's always something to bet on — elections, court verdicts, celebrity drama, whether it's going to rain on a Tuesday in Topeka. The machine never sleeps and it never runs out of things to take your money on. It's gambling without an offseason.

And the people running these platforms aren't dumb. They know exactly what they're doing. They've taken the same dopamine loop that keeps a guy blowing his paycheck on Sunday parlays and stretched it across every waking hour of the week. You don't have to wait for football season. You don't have to wait for the weekend. You can wake up, open your phone, and put money on whether a politician is going to say something stupid before lunch. And people do.

They love losing money to businesses that will just take it, then scream they're poor and cannot get ahead. The house always wins. We know this. Everyone knows this. But the game keeps getting reinvented in new packaging so it doesn't feel like the same game. It does. It always does.

For someone in recovery, this is what makes it harder than it was three years ago. The triggers don't just come during football season anymore. They're everywhere, all the time, wrapped in language that makes them sound smart instead of destructive. You're not a gambler — you're a "participant in prediction markets." You're not chasing — you're "hedging." The vocabulary changes but the cycle doesn't.

So, I am still here 3 years later, still writing about recovery and juggling my professional life and my personal one (which isn't much these days). If you're reading this and struggling — whether you can't tell someone yet, want to quit but don't know how, or you're ready and just need a push — email me at geoffwinningdaily@gmail.com

Stay grinding, stop gambling. Life gets better. One day at a time.
